چکیده

Efficient coding has been proposed as a first principle explaining neuronal response properties in the central nervous system. The shape of optimal codes, however, strongly depends on the natural limitations of the particular physical system. Here we investigate how optimal neuronal encoding strategies are influenced by the finite number of neurons N (place constraint), the limited decoding time window length T (time constraint), the maximum neuronal firing rate f(max) (power constraint), and the maximal average rate (f)(max) (energy constraint). While Fisher information provides a general lower bound for the mean squared error of unbiased signal reconstruction, its use to characterize the coding precision is limited. Analyzing simple examples, we illustrate some typical pitfalls and thereby show that Fisher information provides a valid measure for the precision of a code only if the dynamic range (f(min)T, f(max)T) is sufficiently large. In particular, we demonstrate that the optimal width of gaussian tuning curves depends on the available decoding time T. Within the broader class of unimodal tuning functions, it turns out that the shape of a Fisher-optimal coding scheme is not unique. We solve this ambiguity by taking the minimum mean square error into account, which leads to flat tuning curves. The tuning width, however, remains to be determined by energy constraints rather than by the principle of efficient coding.

Fisher information and temporal correlations for spiking neurons with stochastic dynamics.

Population coding accuracy can be studied using Fisher information. Here the Fisher information and correlation functions are determined analytically for a network of coupled spiking neurons with a more general than Poisson stochastic dynamics. It is shown that stimulus-driven temporal correlations between neurons always increase the Fisher information, whereas stimulus-independent correlations...

Optimal Population Coding , Revisited

Cortical circuits perform the computations underlying rapid perceptual decisions within a few dozen milliseconds with each neuron emitting only a few spikes. Under these conditions, the theoretical analysis of neural population codes is challenging, as the most commonly used theoretical tool – Fisher information – can lead to erroneous conclusions about the optimality of different coding scheme...

Neurometric function analysis of population codes

The relative merits of different population coding schemes have mostly been analyzed in the framework of stimulus reconstruction using Fisher Information. Here, we consider the case of stimulus discrimination in a two alternative forced choice paradigm and compute neurometric functions in terms of the minimal discrimination error and the Jensen-Shannon information to study neural population cod...

Optimal information transmission in nonlinear arrays through suprathreshold stochastic resonance

We examine the optimal threshold distribution in populations of noisy threshold devices. When the noise on each threshold is independent, and sufficiently large, the optimal thresholds are realized by the suprathreshold stochastic resonance effect, in which case all threshold devices are identical. This result has relevance for neural population coding, as such noisy threshold devices model the...
